Na początku października ukazała się trzecia płyta zespołu Hurts zatytułowana “Surrender”. Mieliśmy przyjemność porozmawiania z wokalistą grupy, Theo Hutchcraftem, którego spytaliśmy m.in. o pracę nad albumem, historię przeboju “Some Kind of Heaven” oraz o nadchodzący koncert w Polsce.

Mamy nadzieję, że tytuł Waszej nowej płyty nie jest znakiem, że chcecie odejść od muzyki?

(śmiech) Nie, nie martwcie się. Jedną z rzeczy, jaką lubię, to wybór takich rzeczy, które mają różne znaczenia. To pozwala ludziom wybrać pewne rzeczy. A „Surrender” jest pewnego rodzaju ekscytującym tytułem, który ma zarówno dobre, jak i złe znaczenia. To zawsze dobra droga do rozpoczęcia pracy nad albumem.

Jak przebiegła praca nad płytą?

Trwała rok. Cały zeszły rok spędziliśmy na pisaniu materiału,  a na początku tego kończyliśmy ją. Myślę, że rok to odpowiedni czas na tworzenie albumu, bo daje Ci to wystarczającą ilość czasu na napisanie piosenek.

Wszystkie utwory z „Surrender” są całkiem różne. , żeby dwa utwory nie były do siebie podobne. Na tej płycie jest wiele różnych nastrojów, w tym piosenki brzmiące jak kawałki z naszych poprzednich płyt, a także całkiem nowy, świeży materiał.

Czy praca nad „Surrender” bardzo różniła się od pracy nad Waszymi dwiema poprzednimi płytami?

Tak, żeby nagrać tę płytę podróżowaliśmy dookoła świata. Poprzednie albumy nagraliśmy w Manchesterze, a „Surrender” powstawał w Ameryce, Szwajcari, Szwecji… Proces pisania też był trochę inny, bo pracowaliśmy w różnych miejscach.

Jak wygląda proces pisania utworów przez Ciebie i Adama?

Piszemy utwory razem, ale także osobno, ale wtedy zawsze kończymy je razem.

Jednym z singli z „Surrender” jest utwór „Some Kind of Heaven”, który stał się przebojem. Jak przebiegła praca nad tym numerem?

Napisaliśmy go w miarę szybko, całość była gotowa po jakieś półtorej godzinie. Ta piosenka różni się nieco od pozostałych utworów, które zrobiliśmy wcześniej.

Napisanie którego utworu zabrało Wam najwięcej czasu?

Ostatniej piosenki z płyty, czyli „Policewoman”. Co prawda napisaliśmy ją całkiem wcześnie w całym procesie powstawania płyty, a nawet ją nagraliśmy, ale została ona na laptopie naszego producenta. A że laptop był w samochodzie, który mu ukradziono, to straciliśmy wszystkie nagrania. Musieliśmy zacząć wszystko od nowa.

Czy ta druga wersja utworu różni się od tej pierwotnej?

Nie, przywróciliśmy mu pierwotną formą. Daliśmy radę odtworzyć wszystko tak, jak zrobiliśmy to za pierwszym razem.

Które z utworów z płyty są dla Ciebie najważniejsze bądź najbliższe?

„Wings”, bo jest bardzo energetyczną piosenką, a także „Wish” czy „Weight of the World”, która jest bardzo silna. „Lights” też przynosi mi wiele radości.

W klipie do tej piosenki możemy zobaczyć Twoje niezłe warunki taneczne. Czy dostałeś kiedyś propozycję udziału w „Tańcu z gwiazdami” lub tego typu programach tanecznych?

(śmiech) Mogę jedynie powiedzieć, że miałem duży ubaw na planie teledysku. Nigdy wcześniej nie trenowałem tańca.

W styczniu kolejny raz przyjedziecie do Polski. Co tym razem nam pokażecie?

Będzie ogromnie i ekscytująco. Mamy już na koncie trzy płyty, więc tym samym mamy więcej utworów, które możemy zagrać. Lubimy dziką publiczność, dlatego nie możemy się doczekać koncertu. Powinno być dobrze.

Jak wspominacie poprzednie koncerty w Polsce?

Były fantastyczne. Publiczność była świetna, czuliśmy od nich ogromne emocje  Mamy wielu lojalnych fanów w Polsce. Teraz skupiamy się na próbach do występów. Nie możemy doczekać się trasy koncertowej.

In the beginning of the October Hurts released their 3rd studio album called “Surrender”. We’d an opportunity to talk with band’s vocalist Theo Hutchcraft and ask him about working on the album, story behind the single “Some Kind of Heaven” and upcoming gig in Poland.

We hope the album’s title isn’t the sign, that you’re going to surrender from music business?

(laughs) No, don’t worry. One thing I quite like is to pick things that have a lot of different meanings which let people take certain things from. And „Surrender” is kind of exciting title which have also good and bad meanings. It’s always nice way to start, when you’re making an album.

How has the work on this album lasted?

It took the year. We spent all last year making it and the beginning of this year finishing it. I think one year is a great amount of time to make an album. It gives you enough time to create the songs.

All the songs from „Surrender” are quite different. When we’re making album we always try to make all of the songs unique, don’t make two songs similar. This album has a lot of different moods familiar to people and songs which sounds like records from our two previous albums, but also some news fresh stuff.

Was the work on this album different from work on your two previous CDs?

Yes, we travelled all around the world to make this record. We made our two albums in Manchester and this time we came to America, to Switzerland, to Sweden… We working proccess was quite different, because we worked in the different places.

How has the proccess of writing material with Adam looks like?

We write songs together, but also separately, but we always finishing them together.

One of the singles from „Surrender” is „Some Kind of Heaven” which became a world-wide hit, also in Poland. What’s this song about?

We wrote that song quite quickly. It didn’t took more than one and half hour to write it. This song is quite different from all records we did before.

And which song took you the most of the time?

Last song from the album – „Policewoman”. It is a song we wrote quite early in the proccess and we recorded it, but then the producer had his laptop on his car which was stolen and all of the songs were on this computer. We lost everything. We had to start again and it took as quite a lot of time to re-write and re-record this songs.

Was this second versions similar to the original ones or was is too hard to re-record it?

No, we got it back to the original form. We managed to pick it together just like we did for the first time.

And which songs from this album are the most important and personal for you?

Song „Wings” is very powerful song, „Wish” and „Weight of the World”, which is very intense. Song „Lights” was very enjoyable to make too.

In the videoclip for „Lights” we can see you dancing and you did it quite good! Have you ever consider about taking part in „Dancing with the Stars” format or any other dance show?

(laughs) I can only tell you that I enjoyed dancing on this clip a lot. I’ve never trained dancing before.

On January you’re going to perform in Poland for the next time. What can we expect from this particular show?

It’s gonna be big and exciting. We already have three albums now, so we have a lot of songs to sing. We really like the wild audience and we can’t wait to perform. Should be good.

How do remember previous shows in Poland?

It was fantastic. The audience was great, we felt a big passion from them. We’ve got a lot of loyal fans in Poland. Now it’s time for rehearsals for shows. We cannot wait to go for tour.
