Margaret i Matt Dusk postanowili zjednoczyć siły i stworzyć wspólny album studyjny zatytułowany “Just the Two of Us”, który ukazał się w ubiegłym tygodniu. W rozmowie z nami duet opowiedział o współpracy, nagraniach albumu oraz o zabawnych sytuacji ze studia nagraniowego.
Zapewne słyszeliście już to pytanie nieraz, ale zaryzykujemy: jak doszło do Waszej współpracy?
Matt: Chcecie poznać prawdziwą czy zmyśloną historię?
Margaret: Prawdziwa historia jest nudna, bo poznaliśmy się na gali. Pozmyślajmy!
Ok, to zacznijmy!
Margaret: Poznałam go w samolocie do Nikąd.
Matt: Było tam dwóch pilotów, którzy chcieli wyskoczyć. Musiałem przejąć stery. Ale wtedy my też musieliśmy skakać.
Margaret: Matt się wystraszył, więc zaczęłam śpiewać „Something Stupid”, by go uspokoić. Wtedy na mnie spojrzał i powiedział, że jeżeli przeżyjemy tę katastrofę, to chce nagrać ze mną płytę. Tak się poznaliśmy (śmiech).
A prawdziwa historia to…
Matt: Jak wspomniała Margaret, poznaliśmy się na gali, gdzie oboje śpiewaliśmy. Zaczęliśmy rozmawiać i rzuciliśmy: „Hej, a gdyby nagrać coś razem?”. Rozmawialiśmy i rozmawialiśmy, z czego narodził się cały pomysł.
Z tego, co wiemy, planowaliście nagrać tylko jeden utwór. Czy to prawda?
Tak, chcieliśmy wydać tylko jeden singiel, ale potem zdecydowaliśmy się na nagranie całej płyty.
Obecnie jest mnóstwo albumów z coverami klasycznych kawałków. Co jest unikatowego w Waszym duecie?
Myślę, że głos Margaret robi z tego albumu coś wyjątkowego. Taki album nie jest unikatowy dla mnie, bo ludzie mogą spodziewać się ode mnie właśnie takiej muzyki. Ale Margaret jest wokalistką popową, a teraz śpiewa bardziej jazzowy repertuar.
Margaret: Co ciekawe, na tej płycie możecie usłyszeć mieszankę popu i jazzu. Spotkaliśmy się w środku i to jest unikatowe. Możecie to lubić lub nie. Poza tym, cała płyta jest różowa i świecąca!
Jak wspominacie czas spędzony w studiu?
Część materiału nagraliśmy w Toronto, a część w Polsce, gdzie ostatecznie spotkaliśmy się, by dokończyć płytę. Teraz śmieszy nas to, że trochę się od siebie uzależniliśmy (śmiech). Kiedy wchodzisz do studia, to wszystko nabiera rzeczywistych kształtów, bo pojawia się interakcja, która sprawia, że wszystko jest zabawne.
Pamiętacie jakieś zabawne sytuacje ze studia?
Margaret: Tak naprawdę to pamiętam złe momenty. Kiedy nagrywaliśmy moje partie wokalne, zachorowałam i miałam gorączkę. W niektórych piosenkach słyszę, jak pociągam nosem (śmiech).
Matt: To jest zabawne, bo jak ja jestem chory i coś nagrywam, to ludzie to nie usłyszą, tylko ja to słyszę.
Nagraliście piętnaście kawałków, które są klasykami jazzowymi lat 20. i 30., a także tymi współczesnymi. Kto decydował o utworach, które pojawiły się na płycie?
Matt: Ja. Pierwotnie mieliśmy wydać album w stylu bossa-nova. Ale ten styl jest bardzo wolny, więc zdecydowaliśmy się na odrobinę swingu. Tak też zrobiliśmy. Ale wracając do pytania, to wyglądało raczej tak: „Co myślisz o tej piosence? A o tej?”. Myślę, że moglibyśmy wydać kolejne cztery takie płyty, bo jest tak dużo dobrych utworów!
A czy nagraliście jakieś piosenki, który ostatecznie nie trafiły na płytę?
Margaret: Nie.Wiecie, Matt jest szefem i nie możesz powiedzieć mu „Nie”. Ale ja to zrobiłam, bo nie chciałam jednej piosenki.
Matt: A ja bardzo chciałem, by ją zaśpiewała. Ale pod koniec dnia powiedziałem „Kurde”… Oj, czy ten wywiad leci na żywo?!
Margaret: Oczywiście, jest emitowany w trzydziestu krajach w Europie (śmiech).
Matt: Nawet w Kazachstanie?! (śmiech)
Nie, nie jest, nie martw się!
Matt: Uff… Ale kończąc odpowiedź: mieliśmy dużo katalogów, z których mogliśmy wziąć każdy utwór. Więc przedyskutowaliśmy wiele piosenek.
Który utwór było Wam najtrudniej zaśpiewać?
Margaret: Miałam frajdę z nagrywania „Gee Baby, Ain’t I Good to You”, bo to bluesowy kawałek, i do tego trochę brudny…
Matt: A dla mnie było to trudne, bo nie mam bluesowego głosu.
Skoro już mówimy o piosenkach, to który utwór z płyty jest Waszym ulubionym? Naszym jest „Your Kiss Is on My List”…
Wielu muzyków mówi, że to także ich ulubiona piosenka. Zresztą, moja też. Lubię też „Something Stupid”, bo ten utwór wiele dla mnie znaczy.
Margaret: Ja lubię „Our Love Is Here to Stay”, „I Got It Bad and That Ain’t Good” i „Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars”.
Dlaczego więc na pierwszy singiel wybraliście „Just the Two of Us”?
Matt: Margaret, Ty chciałaś tę piosenkę.
Margaret: Nie, nie chciałam, bo wolałam „‘Deed I Do”! Ok, myślę, że „Just the Two of Us” jest jazzowa, ale przy tym nieco popowa. Ale pomyślałam, że jak chcemy pokazać ten album jako bardziej jazowy, powinniśmy wybrać „‘Deed I Do”.
Do obu zrealizowaliście natomiast teledyski. Jak wspominacie dzień na planie zdjęciowym? O czym będą te klipy?
Margaret: W tym stylu muzycznym chcemy widzieć muzyków, którzy nie opowiadają żadnych historii, ale grają muzykę. Całkiem ładnie w tym wyszliśmy, pomimo tego, że nagrywaliśmy o czwartej w nocy i byliśmy piekielnie zmęczeni.
Matt: To był ciężki dzień. Trudno jest być „włączonym” tak długo. Kiedy kamera jest zapalona, to uśmiechasz się i śpiewasz, ale jak światełko gaśnie, Ty też (śmiech).
Planujecie wspólną trasę koncertową po Polsce?
Mamy nadzieję, że zagramy ją w styczniu. Myślimy tylko o trasie po Polsce, bo na więcej nie mamy czasu. Oboje mamy także swoje projekty solowe.
Zacząłeś już pracę nad swoją nową solową płytą?
Tak, pracuję nad nią od dwóch lat. Mam nadzieję, że niedługo połowa materiału będzie już gotowa. To będą moje autorskie piosenki. Będzie bardziej popowo niż na płycie „Good News”.

Polish singer Margaret and Kanadian artist Matt Dusk decided to work together and record the recently released album called “Just the Two of Us”. We asked them about beginnings of their collaboration, studio recordings and funny stories during working on the album.
You’ve probably heard that question a lot, but we’ll try: how has the collaboration between you begun?
Matt: Do you wanna know true stroy or fake story?
Margaret: True story is kinda boring, we met at the party. Let’s make it up!
Ok, so let’s go with those fake one!
Margaret: I met him on the plane to Nowhere.
Matt: And there was a two pilots, who wanted to jump out. And I had to take control over the plain. But then we also had to jump out.
Margaret: He got scared, so I started to sing to calm him down. And I started to sing „Something Stupid” and then he looked at me and said: „If we gonna live that crush and live one more day, I wanna have an album with you”. That’s how we met (laughs).
And the real story is…
Matt: We’ve met at the party where both of us were singing. And it was like „Hey, what about record something together?”. We were talking and talking and whole idea came through.
As we know, at the beginning of this idea you’re about to record only one song. Is it true?
Yes, we wanted to release only one single. But then we decided to make a whole album.
Nowadays there’s a lot of albums with the covers of the classical songs. What’s unique for your duo?
I think that Margaret’s voice makes this album very unique. This album is not unique for me, because people could expect this kind of music from me. But Margaret is pop singer and now she’s singing more jazz staff.
Margaret: What’s interesting, on this album you can hear the mixture of jazz and pop. We’ve met in the middle and that’s unique. You can like it or not. And it’s pink and shiny!
How do you remember the time you’ve spent on the music studio?
We recorded some tracks in Toronto and some in Poland. In the end we’ve met in Poland to finish the album. This is funny now for us, because we’re getting used to each other (laughs). When you’re coming to the studio, it’s becoming real, because there’s an interaction which makes it funny. We’ve spent a very long time together.
Do you remember any funny story from the recording proccess?
Margaret: Actually, I remember some bad moments. When we’re recording my vocal parts, I got sick and had a fever. I can hear on some records that I was sniffing.
Matt: It’s funny, because when I’m recording tracks while I’m sick, people can’t hear that, but I can.
You recorded fifteen songs together, all of them are classical songs from 20s, 30s and some more modern tracks. Who chose the tracklist from the album?
I did. Originally, we wanted to release the bossa-nova album. But bossa-nova is also very slow, so we decided to swing it a little bit. So we did. But backing to your question, it was like „What about this song? What about that song?”. I think I could do next four albums like this, because there is so many great songs!
Had you recorded any extra songs which eventually didn’t appear on the album?
Margaret: No, there was no time for that. You know, Matt was the boss and you can’t say „No” to him. But actually I did, because I didn’t want to do one song.
Matt: And I really wanted her to do it. But in the end of the day I was like „F*ck”… Oops, is this interview live?
Margaret: Of course, it’s broadcasted for 30 countries in Europe! (laughs)
Matt: Even in Kazachstan?! (laughs)
No, it isn’t, don’t worry!
Matt: Uff… But ending my sentence: we had a lot of catalogues where we could take any songs from. So we discussed about many songs.
Which songs was the hardest to cover or to record?
Margaret: I really enjoyed recording „Gee Baby, Ain’t I Good to You” cover, because it’s blues and it’s a little bit dirty.
Matt: And it was really hard for me to sing, because I don’t really have a bluesy voice…
If we’re talking about songs, which is your personal favourite track from the album? Our favourite is „Your Kiss Is on My List”…
A lot of musicians are saying that it is their favourite song too. It’s one of my favourites as well. I also like „Something Stupid”, because this song means a lot for me.
Margaret: I like „Our Love Is Here to Stay”, „I Got It Bad and That Ain’t Good” and „Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars”.
So why did you choose „Just the Two of Us” as the first single from the album?
Matt: Margaret, you wanted that song.
Margaret: No, I didn’t. I wanted „‘Deed I Do”! Ok, I think that „Just the Two of Us” is jazzy but a little bit poppy as well. And I thought, that if we wanted to show this album as a more jazzy one, we should choose „‘Deed I Do”.
As we know, you’ve recently recorded the video-clip for this song. How was the shooting day? What will this video be about?
Matt: It’s just the performance of this song. It’s done quite well.
Margaret: In this kind of music we just want to see musicians. There’s no story in it, we’re just playing the music. And we’re kinda pretty in it, even if it was like 4 am and we’re tired as hell.
Matt: It was a hard day. It’s difficult to be „on” that long. And when the camera is „on”, you’re smiling and singing, but when camera is „off”, you’re not (laughs).
Do you plan common tour across Poland?
We are hoping for January. Now we are thinking about Polish tour only because of our timing. Both of us are working on solo projects.
Have you already started working on your next solo album?
Yes, I’ve been working on for two years. Hopefully, half of them will be ready soon. There will be my own songs. It’s gonna be more poppy than songs from the „Good News”.
