Chociaż ma dopiero 21 lat, na co dzień pracuje z wielkimi gwiazdami, takimi jak Pharrell Williams, Wyclef Jean czy Big Sean. Mieliśmy okazję porozmawiać z Crisem Cabem, którego singiel “Liar Liar” podbił polskie listy przebojów. Zapytaliśmy go o jego początki, współpracę z Pharrellem, debiutancki album, programy typu talent-show oraz plany na przyszłość.
Swoją przygodę z muzyką zacząłeś w wieku 5 lat, kiedy poprosiłeś swoich rodziców o gitarę. Co takiego było w muzyce, że chciałeś ją grać?
Nie mam pojęcia, to zaczęło się samo, coś we mnie grało, grało i grało… Zawsze lubiłem muzykę, ale z jakiegoś powodu chciałem grać na gitarze. Spędzałem godziny na graniu i wtedy uświadomiłem sobie, że naprawdę to kocham.
Kiedy miałeś 14 lat, ojciec zapewnił Ci pierwszą sesję w studiu. Jak to się stało, czego się wówczas nauczyłeś?
Kiedy tata kupił mi gitarę, praktycznie od razu zaczęliśmy nagrywać, śpiewać i pisać moją własną muzykę. Niedługo potem poznałem Pharrella Williamsa, który zaczął słuchać mojej muzyki, zaczął mnie uczyć, stał się moim mentorem, a później – dobrym kolegą. Dla mnie wszystko zaczęło się od gitary.
W 2011 roku podpisałeś kontrakt z wytwórnią CMG 26 Records, która wydała Twoją debiutancką EP-kę pt. “Foreword”. W tym samym roku wystąpiłeś przed koncertem Wyclefa Jeana, z którym później rozpocząłeś współpracę. Jak to się zaczęło?
Wyclef to kolejna, po Pharrellu, osoba, której zostałem przedstawiony przez znajomego kogoś, kto “siedział” w muzyce. Ten znajomy grał Wyclefowi moją muzykę, a ten ją polubił. To było dla mnie cudowne przeżycie, Jean jest dobrym nauczycielem i moim dobrym kolegą, nauczył mnie tak wielu rzeczy o nagrywaniu, produkcji. Jest taki prostolinijny, bardzo szczery i świetny.
Na Twoim debiutanckim mix-tapie pt. “Echo Boom” można usłyszeć wiele gwiazd muzycznych, takich jak Pharrell, Wyclef Jean, Melanie Fiona, Shaggy i Big Sean. Skąd taki pomysł?
To przyszło naturalnie. Miałem ogromne szczęście pracować z paroma świetnymi artystami, którzy chcieli mnie zaangażować. Byłem z nimi w kontakcie, staliśmy się dobrymi znajomymi. Kiedy zacząłem swoją własną karierę, spotkałem ich i zaczęliśmy współpracować.
Jeżeli miałbyś wybrać jednego artystę, który najbardziej Cię inspiruje i wpływa na Twoją muzykę, to wskazałbyś….
Z pewnością powiedziałbym: Pharrell. To on wpływa najbardziej na moją muzykę, na wszystko. Nie byłbym teraz tutaj bez jego rad, wskazówek. Nauczył mnie wielu rzeczy związanych z pisaniem, robieniem muzyki.
Czy jest jeszcze jakiś artysta, z którym chciałbyś coś nagrać?
Osobą, z którą zawsze chciałbym coś nagrać, jest Lenny Kravitz. Uwielbiam jego styl. Nagrywa, gra na gitarze i instrumentach w podobny sposób, co ja.
Prawdziwym przełomem w Twojej karierze był singiel “Liar Liar”, dzięki któremu stałeś się rozpoznawalny. Czy kiedykolwiek spodziewałeś się, że ta piosenka przyniesie Ci międzynarodową popularność?
Ja nie, ale Pharrell już tak. Po tym, jak nagraliśmy teledysk do “Liar Liar”, powiedział do mnie: “Stary, ta piosenka będzie dobra”. Miał rację. Pierwotnie napisaliśmy ten kawałek o chłopaku, który zbyt szybko i za bardzo zaufał swojej pięknej dziewczynie, której tak naprawdę nie znał. On odkrywa, że ona go oszukuje i zdradza za jego plecami, odkrywa jej prawdziwą osobowość. Miałem podobne doświadczenie w życiu. Każdy ma taką sytuację, niekoniecznie z ukochaną osobą, ale także z przyjaciółmi, rodziną. Myślisz, że znasz daną osobę, ale tak naprawdę jej nie znasz. Dlatego napisałem ten utwór.

13 maja br. ukazał się w Polsce Twój debiutancki studyjny album długogrający pt. “Where I Belong”. Co możemy usłyszeć na tej płycie?
Większość utworów napisałem między 17 a 21 rokiem życia. Płyta mówi o dorastaniu, odkrywaniu, kim naprawdę jesteś, kim chcesz być i dokąd chcesz iść. Miałem tyle szczęścia, że mogłem pracować wtedy z wieloma świetnymi producentami: Dallasem Austinem, Pharrellem, Wyclefem Jeanem, Michaelem Busbee’m. Miałem także okazję napisać i wyprodukować z 5-6 piosenek. To był świetne doświadczenie.
Przyznałeś, że “The Sun Is Gonna Rise Again” i “Fables” to jedne z Twoich ulubionych piosenek z albumu. Co jest w nich takiego wyjątkowego?
“The Sun Is Gonna Rise” jest genialna. Przesłanie tego piosenki to tradycyjne reggae – nie produkcja, ale przesłanie. To pozytywny kawałek, mówi o podnoszeniu się po upadku, o tym, że zawsze jest nowy dzień. Utwór uczy traktowania nowego dnia jako całkiem nowego początku. Właśnie o tym jest ta piosenka. “Fables” też jest super, szczególnie dla nastolatków i ludzi w okolicach “dwudziestki”, bo mówi: “znajdź i rób to, co kochasz”. Jednym z najważniejszych dla mnie numerów z albumu jest natomiast “All I Need Is You“. Bardzo lubię ten utwór, musiałem go umieścić na płycie. Ma dobre wibracje, jest melodyczny i relaksacyjny, a także całkowicie inny od reszty.
Naszym faworytem jest za to kawałek “Loves Me Not”. Opowiedz nam więcej o tym utworze, o jego historii.
Ta piosenka jest naprawdę świetna, bo pisałem ją ze świetnymi ludźmi. Pracowałem nad nią z Dallasem Austinem (kolejnym dobrym znajomym), Brentem Paschken i PJ McGinnisem, który jest moją prawą ręką w produkcji muzyki. Miałem wokół siebie wielu cudownych ludzi, to był zabawny czas. Szybko nagraliśmy ten utwór. Prawdą jest to, że nawet nie zauważyłem, kiedy skończyliśmy go nagrywać. Dosłownie, zrobiliśmy to, a parę miesięcy później zapomniałem o nim. Kiedy wracaliśmy do wszystkich piosenek, pomyślałem sobie: “O mój Boże, co to za piosenka? Zapomniałem, że nawet ją zrobiłem!”.
I jest to też drugi singiel z płyty “Where I Belong”. Czy nagrałeś już do niego teledysk?
Tak, właśnie skończyłem. Mam nadzieję, że w ciągu kolejnych tygodni umieszczę go w sieci. Klip jest świetny. Teledysk do “Liar Liar” był zachowany w czarno-białym klimacie, tym razem będzie zupełnie na odwrót – będzie dużo kolorów, światła, efektów, wizualnie będzie super.
Dzisiaj wystąpisz jako gość muzyczny podczas finału programu “X Factor”. Czy kiedykolwiek myślałeś o udziale w jakimkolwiek talent-show? Co myślisz o ludziach, którzy decydują się wziąć udział w tego typu programach?
Myślę, że takie programy są na pewno czymś rozrywkowym, ale trudno w nich pokazać prawdziwy talent oraz to, kim jesteś. Trudno, bo uczestnicy występują tylko kilka razy. Aby czuć się naprawdę komfortowo na scenie, trzeba zagrać co najmniej 100 razy. Kiedy występujesz, to łapie Cię stres, nie możesz pokazać maksimum swoich umiejętności. To smutne, bo czasami utalentowani ludzie, niestety, przepadają w takich programach. Nie wydaje mi się, żebym kiedyś wziął udział w tego typu produkcji, bo to dla mnie bardzo trudne. Muzyka jest dla mnie najważniejszą częścią czegokolwiek. Chociaż możesz występować i szybko stać się gwiazdą, trudno będzie Ci pokazać ludziom Twoją muzykalność oraz to, kim naprawdę jesteś. Muzyka jest dla mnie wszystkim, chcę poświęcać jej swój czas, pisać, występować, czuć się komfortowo na scenie.

Czy pracujesz już nad materiałem na drugą płytę?
Tak, zacząłem od razu po zakończeniu pracy nad “Where I Belong”. Mam nadzieję, że w tym roku wydam drugą płytę, ale na potrzeba czasu, dlatego zacząłem myśleć o krążku już teraz. Kiedy siedziałem nad pierwszym albumem, miałem z 40-50 piosenek. Musisz zrobić dużo muzyki, aby wiedzieć, co chcesz wybrać i z jaką historią podzielić się z ludźmi. Ale teraz to nawet ja nie wiem, czego możecie się spodziewać od płyty. Możecie spodziewać się jednego – zawsze będę starał się być kim byłem, a nawet być lepszym od tego, kim byłem.
Jakie masz hobby, oprócz muzyki?
Dorastałem przy oceanie, spędzałem dużo czasu na łowieniu ryb. Więc teraz, kiedy tylko mam czas wolny, spędzam go nad wodą, surfując.
Jakie masz plany na przyszłość? Jakaś trasa koncertowa?
Zamierzam promować płytę, single. Chcę wyjechać trasę koncertową po Europie, po świecie. Mam nadzieję, że często będę w Polsce i będę miał okazję podzielić się z polskimi fanami moją muzyką na żywo. Nie wiem, kiedy dokładnie. Teraz sprawdzamy wszystkie daty, próbujemy połączyć je ze sobą. Mam nadzieję, że w ciągu kolejnych miesięcu stworzymy grafik koncertów.
Nie możemy się tego doczekać, liczymy na to, że będziemy mieli okazję wtedy być. Dziękujemy Ci za wywiad, życzymy Ci nagrania duetu z Lennym Kravitzem oraz z niecierpliwością czekamy na Twój występ w “X Factorze”!

Even though he’s only 21 y.o., he works with huge stars like Pharrell Williams, Wyclef Jean and Big Sean. We had the opportunity to talk with Cris Cab, whose single “Liar Liar” conquers the polish charts. We asked him about his begginings, collaboration with Pharrell, debut album, talent-shows and plans for future.
You started to play music at the age of 5, when you called your parents to buy your first guitar. What was unique in music for you, that you wanted to play?
I have no idea, it just really started in me, it’ve just been playing and playing… I’ve liked music, but for some reasons I wanted to play guitar. I’ve spent hours and hours playing and then I realised I really love it.
When you were 14, your father bought you first studio session. How has it happened, what have you learnt after that?
When he bought me first guitar, eventually we begun to record, sing and write my own music. After that I was able to meet Pharrell Williams, he begun to listen my music, started to teach me, mentored me. He became a good friend of mine. For me, it all started with the guitar.
In 2011, you signed the contract with CMG 26 Records, who released your debut EP called “Foreword”. During the year, you supported Wyclef Jean in his tour and then he started to work with you. How has this collaboration begun?
He was another one, after Pharrell, who I was introduced by a friend of somebody who was in the music. He was playing my music to Wyclef and he enjoyed it. It was amazing experience for me, Wyclef is a good teacher and great friend of mine, he taught me so much about recording, producing. He is so straightforward, very honest and cool.
In you debut mixtape, “Echo Boom”, there were a lot of huge music stars like Pharrell, Wyclef Jean, Shaggy & Melanie Fiona and Big Sean. How has it started?
It came very natural. I was very fortunate to work with some great artists, who wanted me to involve. I’ve got in touch with them, we became a good friends. So when I started my own career, I met them and we started to collaborate together.

If you would choose one artist, who inspires you and affects in your music the most, it would be…
Definitely I would say: Pharrell. He impacted in my music and everything the most. I wouldn’t be here without his advices, guides. He taught me very much about writing, making music.
Is there still any artist who you want to record with?
Someone who I always wanted to record with is Lenny Kravitz. I really enjoy his style. He records, plays guitar and instruments in the similar way I do.
The real breakthough in your career was “Liar Liar” single, which became your recognizable song. Have you ever expected, that this song will bring you the worldwide popularity?
No, but it was for Pharrell. After we finished shooting the music video, he was like: “Man, this is the song which is gonna be the good one”. He was right. Me and Pharrell originally wrote this song about a guy, who gave his beuatiful girl too much trust too early and he doesn’t really know the girl yet. Eventually he finds out that she’s misusing his trust and sneaking around his back. He discovers her true personality. I also had similar experience in my life. Everyone has been in the situation like that, not only with the opposite sex, but also with the friend, family. You think you know this person, but you don’t actually. That’s why I wrote this song.
May 13 2014 is a date of Polish release of your debut LP called “Where I Belong”. What can we find in this CD?
Most of the songs I wrote between the age 17-21. Album speaks about growing, discovering who you are, who you wanna be and where you wanna go. I was lucky enough to work with some great producers on there: Dallas Austin, Pharrell, Wyclef Jean, Michael Busbee and, of course, I was able to write and produce like 5-6 of the songs. It’s great experience.
You’ve admitted, that “The Sun Is Gonna Rise Again” and “Fables” is one of your favourite songs from the album. What’s unique in this songs for you?
“The Sun Is Gonna Rise” is very cool for me. The message of this song is tradicional reggae – not the production, but message. It’s positive one, speaks about getting up when you fall down, that there’s always a new day. This song teach treating new day as a brand new beggining. That’s what’s the song about. And “Fables” is another cool, especially for the teenagers and people in the early 20s, because it speaks “find and do what you love”. One of the most important songs for me is “All I Need Is You“. I really enjoy this one and I had to put it in the album. It has good vibe, it’s very melodic and relaxing, completely different song from others.
Our personal favourite song from album is “Loves Me Not”. Tell us more about this song, its history.
This song is really great and amazing for me, because I got to write it with great people, got to work with Dallas Austin on it (another great friend of mine), Brent Paschke and PJ McGinnis, who is my right hand man production partner in the music. I had so many great people around me, it was so fun. It was so easy to make this record. The truth is, that I didn’t realise we’ve made it. Literally, we made it and few months later I forgot about it. Then we came back to all songs and I asked myself “OMG, what’s this song? I forgot I’ve even made this song”.

It’s second single from “Where I Belong” actually. Has the video-clip for this song been recorded?
Yes, we’ve just finished filming it. I hope it will be published in next few weeks. The video-clip is really cool. The “Liar Liar” music video was black and white, this one is completely different – there’s a lot of colours, light. It’s full of light, effects, visually cool.
Today you’ll perform as a music guest in the final of Polish “X Factor”. Have you ever thought about participating in any talent-show? What do you think about people who decide to take part in the shows like that?
I think these shows are very entertaining, but also it’s very difficult to show true talent or who you truly are. It’s hard, because the participants only perform a few times. To be truly comfortable on the stage, it takes like hundred of shows. And when you perform, you get nervous, you might not show your best of your ability. It’s sad, because sometimes people with great talents pass by, unfortunately. I don’t think that I’ll take part in the shows like that, because it’s very difficult for me. The music is the most important part of anything for me. Although you can be on the show and you can be a star very quickly, it’s difficult to show people your musicianship, who you truly are. For me it’s all about music, I wanna take time and write, perform, feel comfortable on stage.
Have you already started to work on the material for the second album?
Yes, right after I’ve finished work on “Where I Belong”. Hopefully, I will release new CD in this year, but it takes time. That’s why I’ve started already. When we’ve worked on the first album, we had like 40-50 songs. You have to do a lot of music to know, what you wanna choose and what story you want to share with people. But I don’t even know what to expect from this album so far. One thing you can expect – I’ll always try to be who I was and better than who I was.
What hobbies, expect of music, do you have?
I’ve grown up in ocean and I’ve spent a lot of time grown up, fishing. So whenever I have free-time, I spend it in ocean, surfing.
What plans for future do you have? Any concert tour?
I’m gonna promote my album, singles. I wanna go to the tour throughout the Europe and world. Hopefully, I will be in Poland a lot and will get a chance to sing live for my Polish fans. I don’t know when specifically, but right now we’re figuring out all the dates and trying to fix them together. Hopefully, we can create the concerts schedule in few months.
